The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies is planning a series of events to mark the two-week residency of new Professor of Poetry, Derek Walcott.
Professor Walcott, an acclaimed poet, playwright, essayist, visual artist and recipient of the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature, will take part in several public events:
28 April: Film premiere, Jamaica for Sale
Lively and hard-hitting, with powerful voices, arresting visuals and iconic music, Jamaica for Sale presents a compelling portrayal of an industry in crisis, and the damage that the neocolonial power structures that control tourism continue to wreak.
Admission free. Lakeside Theatre. 7pm.
30 April: Arts on Five and Seague Productions presents Adriano Adewale's Sound Journey
Brazilian master percussionist Adriano Adewale performs a virtuoso work of music, theatre and dance, evoking the enormity of traditional landscapes and communities from Africa to South America.
A mesmerizing and thought-provoking performance, guaranteed to awaken the senses – join us for a special evening with Adriano, as our artist-in-residence performs his delicate and beautiful piece Sound Journey before special guest, Nobel Prize winning poet Derek Walcott.
A discussion will follow the performance. Adriano will talk about the personal experiences that inspired him to make this fascinating performance piece.

1 May: Derek Walcott: In conversation
Derek Walcott will be joined in conversation by Professor Marina Warner and Maria Cristina Fumagalli of the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies to discuss his life and work. Including readings from his works.
Admission free but please book in advance. Lakeside Theatre, 3pm.
