Course description:
This half-day interactive workshop is open to all staff at the University. This has proved to be
a very successful and enjoyable workshop. Staff have the opportunity to take
time out from their normal routines to reflect on issues such as culture,
culture shock, stereotyping and why communication problems and misunderstandings occur. One of the most popular aspects of the course is the student
panel, when international students come along and share with us their first
impressions and experiences of arriving at Essex. Staff from Student
Support, International Academy and
the Students' Union also contribute to this workshop
by supplying information on the special support and resources provided for
international students.
Aims:
- to raise awareness
- to increase sensitivity of cultural differences
- to devise strategies to deal with problems arising from cultural differences.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.
What your colleagues say about this course:
"The student feedback was very useful and they raised some points that can be followed up on to improve their experience. Also understanding the impact that ‘small things’ can have on students who are far from home was useful. "
