Module Enrolment - Frequently Asked Questions

Who has access?

Undergraduate students

eNROL is only available to students on programmes of study leading to a degree. All other students should visit their Department to complete module enrolment.

Postgraduate students

eNROL is only accessible to full time taught postgraduate students on courses of study. (Note: part time students are unable to use this online service and should contact their departmental office direct if they need to choose option modules).

Why do I need to complete Module Enrolment?

You should choose your option modules before the start of the academic year if possible so that you are prepared for the first week of term. You need to know which modules to attend and where the lectures and classes are held. Choosing your modules before the start of term means you will get up-to-date timetable information, and we can ensure that your chosen modules do not clash on the timetable where feasible. It also means that you can look at the content of the modules in advance.

When must I complete Module Enrolment?

eNROL is available from 12.00 on Wednesday 18 April to 08.59am on Monday 24 October.

Students are not permitted to attend modules for which they are not officially enrolled beyond the deadline for choosing modules. Students wishing to change course must also submit their application to change as far in advance of this date as possible, particularly if the change will involve enrolling for different modules. Please note that late requests to change course or enrol for modules will need special approval from the Dean after consultation with the relevant department. It may not be possible to grant late requests as students may have missed too much tuition and/or have missed assessment on the new modules.

New students can enrol for modules as soon as they have received their pre-arrival pack from the Registration Office, which will be from the middle of August onwards. Students should choose all their optional modules before arriving at the University.

Does eNROL know what modules I am eligible to choose?

Yes. eNROL is personalised so it will display the modules available for your year of study and course.

You are not permitted to enrol for a module which you have already taken in a previous stage. Credits cannot be awarded twice for the same module. Students can only take the same module again if they have been required by an exam board to repeat a stage on a full or part-time basis due to academic failure.

Students must enrol for the correct number of modules in accordance with their programme structure and they must attend all associated tuition.

For returning students, eNROL also displays, for information, the modules that you are currently studying and those studied in any previous years, if applicable. If you need to have taken a particular pre-requisite to study a module you are interested in, or you need to take a particular co-requisite, eNROL will carry out a check. eNROL will only allow you to choose modules for which you have the relevant pre-or co-requisites. If you choose an invalid module, it will simply ask you to choose again.

What if I want to take different modules?

eNROL will display the valid options for your course. If you wish to choose a module that is not available within the structure of your course, then you would have to seek approval by requesting a special syllabus from your departmental office.

When do I find out if my choices have been successful?

When you choose an option module, the enrolment is regarded as Provisional (P) until it has been made Firm (F) by the department offering the module. As soon as you have entered your choices in the system, the information is available for departments to view through the central student records database. Departments will review your choices and will send you automated emails to confirm that the enrolment has been approved, or advising why it cannot be approved. Some departments will review the choices daily, others less frequently, according to the needs of the department. For example, in departments which do not control numbers on modules, they may wait until the end of module enrolment and confirm enrolments in bulk. Do not be alarmed if you do not receive feedback immediately!

What do I do where there is a timetable clash?

Where students enrol for two optional modules with a timetable clash between lectures, they are required to change one of the conflicting modules. Where a timetable clash occurs between an optional module and a core/compulsory module, students must choose a different optional module. Where a clash occurs in a class/lab session and there is no opportunity to move to another class/lab session, students must choose another option immediately. Students cannot claim extenuating circumstances if they miss sessions because they have not taken steps to change options quickly.

What happens if I change my mind?

You may return to this online service and amend your choices whilst eNROL is open.

Can I make any changes to my half year modules in the Spring term?

Yes. The University allows students to request changes to module enrolment, until the end of the second week of the Spring term for Spring term only modules. You cannot change any Full Year modules in the Spring term.

What if my chosen modules are capped?

Where modules are restricted in size, eNROL knows how many students may take the module and how many spaces are available at the time that you are choosing your modules. eNROL will alert you if you choose a module that is already full and invite you to choose again. Where a department wishes to manage a waiting list, eNROL will enable additional students to choose the module and you will be advised by the department that you are on a waiting list.

What happens if I want to do a different course?

eNROL assumes that you will continue with the course for which you have accepted a place at Essex, or the course that you followed last year.

Is help available to complete module enrolment online?

If you have queries about what modules to choose, or any general queries about your modules or programme of study, contact or visit your departmental office.

Queries about any of the online screens in eNROL or about any technical issue, please e-mail enrol (non-Essex users add @essex.ac.uk). Please provide your course title in full, your department and what year you are in.
