WebCT
IMPORTANT:
- The University has adopted Moodle as its institutional
Virtual Learning Environment as of September 2007.
- This will involve retiring WebCT and migrating current
courses into Moodle.
- If you wish to use a VLE to create a web-based course,
we strongly recommend that you use
Moodle, rather
than WebCT.
Accessing WebCT
All users of WebCT must have a valid WebCT ID and password.
To access WebCT, go to:
http://courses2.essex.ac.uk:8900
After logging in, you will see a personal portal
(called "My WebCT") with a list of course(s) which
you have access to. Just click on the title of a course to
access the home page of that course.
The level of access to these courses
depends on permissions that users have been given by the WebCT
administrator. There are four types of users:
- WebCT administrator - who can create courses for teachers
and issue user names and passwords.
- Course designers (teachers)- who can upload course materials
and edit course content.
- Teaching assistants (TA) have a limited permissions
than course designers.
- Students - who can access a course without being able
to edit or change content of the course.
Support for WebCT
WebCT is supported by the Learning Technology Team (email: ltt, non-Essex users should add @essex.ac.uk).
Please contact us if you wish to apply for a WebCT account, to request the set up of a course in WebCT
(providing the name of the course, the course code, and the names of staff to be added), or to add
students/users to your course.
Please note:
- Course designers can give access to users who already
have a WebCT ID (via the Control Panel > Manage students
> Add students).
- Course designers can reset the password for their students
who already have a WebCT ID (via the Control Panel > Manage
students, then click on the name and reset the password).
Using WebCT
These guides are PDF files. You will need the free
Adobe
Reader to view them.
If you require assistance with any of the other functions
in WebCT, please contact the Learning Technology Team.

For any enquiries with regard to difficulties with WebCT, please
provide the Learning Technology Team with the following information:
