...wanting to author e-learning materials
The University of Essex is registered to the JISC Electronic Plagiarism Detection Service (branded as TurnitinUK).
TurnitinUK is a browser-based system which compares submitted work against:
An originality report is returned for each piece of work submitted, which highlights incidences of matched text to the above; the system can also highlight possible incidences of collusion. It is important to emphasise that the system does not determine whether plagiarism has occurred: that has to be assessed by the tutor reviewing the reports.
A demo of TurnitinUK is available.
Staff members wanting to make use of TurnitinUK must register to use it. Please contact the Learning Technology Team for the account join ID and password for the University of Essex (e-mail: ltt).
It is a requirement of JISC that students are informed about the service and understand that their work may be submitted for checking.
The University has extended its information to students on Data Protection and the JISC detection service which is available here:
The University recommends that departments making use of the service adapt their assignment submission sheet to expand on the statement of verification. An example is provided below:

I understand that my work may be submitted for checking to the JISC plagiarism detection service, TurnitinUK, and that use of this Service complies with UK Data Protection Law. http://www2.essex.ac.uk/rm/dp/students.shtm
