ELeN Newsletter: February 2008
Welcome to the first edition of the ELeN Newsletter!
Introduction to the Learning Technology Team (LTT)
The Learning Technology Team (part of the Web Support Unit) is
responsible for maintaining, administering, and developing the
University’s learning technology systems. These include the Course
Materials Respository (CMR), the Online Coursework Submission (OCS),
Moodle, WebCT (up until the end of this academic year), Personal
Response Systems (PRS), Perception, Turnitin, and myLife.
You can find out more about the learning technology systems that
we support at:

Welcome Marty!
On 21 January, Marty Jacobs joined the Learning Technology Team
as our newest Learning Technologist. Contact details for Marty, and
all other LTT staff, are on the WSU staff page.
However, I'd like to
take this opportunity to remind staff that all learning technology
enquiries should be sent to ltt@essex.ac.uk. (This is to prevent
requests e-mailed to individual members of LTT staff from
languishing un-dealt with during periods of staff absence. Better,
speedier service etc.)
Learning and Teaching Series
Come and meet the Learning Technology Team on
Thursday 21 February 2008,
1pm - 2pm, in Room 6.300, when we will be giving an overview of our role and providing information
about the various learning technologies we support.
The presentation will include demonstrations of the technology,
as well as advice on appropriate use for teaching and learning purposes.
If you are interested in attending the presentation, please contact Nicola Billam,
Learning and Teaching Officer:

Updates
WebCT Retirement
As many of you are aware, we have adopted a new virtual learning
environment (VLE) this academic year - Moodle - which is replacing
WebCT. WebCT will be officially retired at the end of this academic
year, so all courses should be out of WebCT by October 2008.
We can
provide assistance with migrating WebCT courses to Moodle, so please
contact us. We also provide an introductory course on Moodle (see
below).
Training Courses
We are pleased to announce dates for introductory courses on
Moodle and Personal Response Systems (PRS):
- Thursday 27th March, 10 - 12.30 (Moodle) 2.30 - 5 (PRS)
- Wednesday 2nd April, 10 - 12.30 (Moodle) 2.30 - 5 (PRS)
- Tuesday 8th April, 10 - 12.30 (Moodle) 2.30 - 5 (PRS)
If you are interested in attending any of the training sessions
above, please contact us and we will add you to
the participant list. We do need to know who you are beforehand!
Please also note that sessions will only run if there are at least 5
attendees.
For more details about the sessions, please see:

Handy Hints
Accessibility
The law requires responsible bodies to anticipate the requirements
of disabled people or students and the adjustments they could be
making for them. This applies to all the interactions a student
makes with the University including all elements of course delivery.
