Moodle

A teacher view of Moodle

When you are set up with a new course in Moodle, the homepage of your course will look similar to the screenshot below:

The home page of a Moodle course in the teacher view has three main features:

(1) The "Turn editing on" button

This button is located at the top of the right-hand side of the screen and allows you to make changes to your course, in particular add/alter activities and resources in the course content area.

When you click on this button, you will see a number of editing icons next to all the editable areas of the course. These icons allow you to add, delete, or modify course content.

The editing icons are listed below:

Screenshot of the delete icon The X deletes resources and activities (with a warning) whereas it only removes blocks (which can be added at any time later).

Screenshot of the help icon This provides you with a popup help window specific to the activity or element in question.

Screenshot of the indent icon Means “indent” or move to the right.

Screenshot of the move icon Moves a resource or activity tool up or down.

Screenshot of the group icon The group determiner for the tool, which, by default, is set at "no groups".

(2) The "Switch role to…" drop-down menu

This is located next to the "Turn editing on" button (top right-hand side). It allows you to toggle between different roles in your course. For example, selecting the Student option would present the course as a student would see it.

(3) The Administration block

This is one of a number of blocks that appear at the sides of the course content area. This block is located on the left-hand side of the screen and contains various options to assist you in the administration of your course. Most of these options cannot be seen by students. Please do not alter the settings in this block unless you know what you are doing, as you could potentially make your course unusable for your students!
