Moodle

Requesting a course

If you want to use Moodle to support your students’ learning, you will need to request the set up of a course in Moodle via e-mail: ltt@essex.ac.uk, providing:
  • Your full name;
  • The full name of the course;
  • The short course code (if it is a module)
  • If the course you want set up is not a standard module, please provide as much information about the course as you can.
  • Names of any other staff who should have access.
Please allow 5 working days for the set up of your course.

You will notified by email when the new course has been set up. In most cases, you will be given access to the course as a teacher, a role that allows you to edit the course.

Student access to your course

There are three main criteria that need to be met, before a student will be able to access a course in Moodle:
  • The student needs a Computing Service account (i.e. a University login).
  • The student needs to be enrolled on the course.
  • The Moodle course* needs to be made available to the student (see the instructions below). Moodle can take 24-48 hours to reflect any changes to student details.

* Note: for scheme-based courses set up in Moodle, at least one of the core modules need to be available to students, otherwise the student won't see the scheme course.

Making your course available to your students

By default, a new course that is set up in Moodle is hidden from students. This is so you can work on the course until it is ready for viewing. Your course will not be available to students until you make it visible to them.

The document "Making your course available" (PDF) gives instructions on how to make your course visible.

PDF files require the free Adobe Reader to view them.
