ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques
Date: 23 July ? 4 August
Location: Ljubljana
Target Groups: MA and PhD
students, teachers and researchers in political science
and related disciplines.
Objectives: Following the
success of the first summer school in 2006, the ECPR
Summer School will provide high quality up to date
training in a broader range of specially selected
methods across the whole spectrum of approaches employed
within the social sciences. It will emphasise those
methods which are particularly salient for research
questions in political science and neighbouring disciplines,
as well as dealing with all stages of a project and
catering to the needs of research set at the macro
and at the micro level, covering both 'quantitative'
and 'qualitative' designs.
Courses: The ECPR Summer
School comprises an intensive programme of seminars
and lab (or fieldwork) sessions, which requires strong
commitment from participants. The teaching language
will be English. Participants must therefore be fluent
in spoken English. The main two week courses will
consist of ten teaching days, each of which is scheduled
to last three hours (ninety minutes on day one). The
overall number of class contact hours will thus be
about thirty. In addition, participants will be given
three to four hours' additional work (reading and
supplementary practical work) each day. Those participants
who successfully complete their chosen course will
be awarded either three or five ECTS credits from
the University of Ljubljana depending on whether an
exam is taken.
Deadline: There is no deadline
for applications, although participants are encouraged
to apply early as course places are limited.
Scholarships: Participants
may apply to the ECPR Mobility Fund to help cover
travel and accommodation costs.
Fees: There is no deadline
for applications, although participants are encouraged
to apply early as course places are limited.

The European Union Enlargement in South-Eastern
Europe : Security and Political-Economic Dimensions
Organised by the ECPR Standing Group
on International Relations
Date: 2 ? 14 July
Location: Ljubljana
Target Groups: PhD students
in advanced stages of their PhD project, dealing with
the security and/or political-economic dimensions
of the European Union enlargement in South-Eastern
Europe.
Objectives: The possibilities,
hopes and realities of the processes of European Union's
(EU) Enlargement in South-eastern Europe pose many
complex security and political-economic questions.
One of the biggest is the starting point we take for
the exploration: either from EU and its member-states
in South Eastern Europe, but also from those states
that will remain out of the EU as well as from the
broader regional and global perspectives. In any case
international, national and human security and political-economic
(both in comprehensive understandings) concerns seem
to be as important as they were at the beginning of
the EU project despite changed in the historical context.
We propose to explore those themes methodologically,
theoretically and empirically at the macro, middle
and micro level of research with interested advanced
PhD students. We are interested in the contribution
of advanced PhD students to the following issues:
-
Studying Security and Political Economy in EU
Enlargements: Incorporating the Understandings
of the Balkans
-
EU Enlargement in the Balkans within International
Security and Political Economy: Conflictmanagement,
Peace- or Market-making?
-
EU Enlargement and the Political-Economic Security
in the Balkans
- EU Enlargement and the Human Security and Development
in the Balkans
Courses:
-
Meta-theoretical Assumptions in Studying Security
and Political Economy of EU Enlargements
-
Theorizing the Security and Political Economy
of EU Enlargements: Incorporating the Understandings
of the Balkans
Deadline: Application
deadline 15 March 2007.
