Economics at Essex
Financial crises. Unemployment. Immigration. Global competition. Economics is
concerned with the material well-being of human societies. At Essex we push the
frontiers of accepted wisdom, examining the decisions of individuals, the
strategies of firms and the policies of governments to understand and challenge
the standard paradigms of economics.
Economics develops your understanding of how the world works. You can make
better informed decisions as a consumer, voter, or simply as an individual in
society. We won’t tell you what to think but we’ll provide you with the tools to
think clearly. So, if you’re ingenious, industrious and independent, you’ll
succeed at Essex.
Our department is a richly diverse home to staff and students from all over
the world who have a strong sense of belonging and want to think, learn and
achieve together. Our staff and students see the world through an economist's
lens to influence and improve the world – for themselves and others.
Ingenious, industrious and independent
Our Deputy Head of Department,
Professor Marco Francesconi, tells us what makes Essex a special place to
study and what qualities a great economics student has.
We are ranked among the top 150 departments on the planet according to the
QS World University Rankings (2017) and ranked 5th in the UK for research
(REF 2014), with over 90% of our
research rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
The Times and The
Sunday Times Good University Guide
(2017) ranked us as a top 30 UK university for economics and we achieved 92%
student satisfaction (NSS 2016).
