WORK PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES
The "University of Essex - Short Term Work Placement Scheme" provides work
placements of between 2 and 4 weeks. Placements will take place during the
2010 vacation periods. Placements are open to current students
(undergraduate and postgraduate, including those graduating this year) and
to 2009 Graduates.

Postgraduate Taught Studentships
Department of Economics, Lancaster University Management School
PhD Studentship – 3 years from September 2010
The Department has one remaining PhD studentship available from September
2010. The studentship will support 3 years of full-time study towards a PhD.
The studentship provides a fee waiver and subsistence support at ESRC rates
(currently about £13k pa) and the student will be expected to provide
limited tutorial class support for first year classes in micro/macro and/or
quantitative methods. Training and support for this teaching role will be
provided by the Department. The area of study is open and the successful
student would be expected to participate in the regional consortial advanced
courses that we share with Manchester University in their first year of
study.
The Department has about 25 faculty and a stock of approximately 25 PhD
students who are an integral part of the Department. It is a lively research
environment with particular strengths in macro/finance/time series and in
labour/education/microeconometrics but with supervision available in a wider
range of cognate areas. A flavour of the Department can be found on its

New Essex career development bursary for research staff
There is a new bursary which has been
introduced specifically for the career development of research staff who are
on fixed term contracts.
The purpose of the bursary is to enable research staff to take advantage
of training and development opportunities that will assist them in achieving
their career goals and that would not otherwise be available to them.
Each application requires the support of the Research Manager or
Principal Investigator.

3 Junior Researchers Position IEB (Barcelona)
In the Research Programs “Fiscal Federalism†(Heads: Albert Solé-Ollé &
Núria Bosch-Roca) and “Cities and Innovation†(Heads: Prof. Elisabet
Viladecans-Marsal & Prof. José GarcÃa-Quevedo) at the IEB, we are seeking 3
junior researchers in economics.
The concrete tasks associated to the positions are: (i) Writing and
publishing her own research papers; (ii) Support in the management of the
IEB’s events and publications; (iii) A limited amount of teaching.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. and well-founded knowledge of
micro-economics and applied econometrics. All applicants with an economics
background will be considered, but we will give priority to applicants
working in the following fields: (i) Fiscal Federalism; (ii) Political
Economy; (iii) Economics of Taxation; (iv) Urban Economics; (v) Economics of
Innovation. Also, a good knowledge of quantitative methods and management
skills are required. Adequate experience in research and/or teaching is an
advantage. Fluency in English is required, and some knowledge of Spanish is
welcome.
The position is for 3 years. The salary is 2,000 euro/month, net of taxes
and employee social security contributions. The candidates should provide:
1) a full CV; 2) a research summary with a list of publications (including
also prospects of publication); 3) a letter of application; and 4) two
letters of reference. Copies of relevant university academic transcripts
will be demanded at some point of the hiring process.

Career Pathways for Researchers Publication
The new ''Career
Pathways for Researchers'' publication (pdf format) is now available. It
contains the profiles of research students and staff who were or are at
Essex. The publication can also be found from the
Learning and Teaching Unit
introductory pages for research staf.
The purpose of the publication is to illustrate the variety of career
paths that researchers have followed after and whilst they have been at
Essex. It flags up the range of skills that researchers develop in pursuit
or alongside their research. The intention is to to use the profiles in
group and individual sessions that the LTU run.

Job Opportunity to Become an Economics Teacher
We are a highly selective girls' school in Orpington in South East
London, with a 100% rate of HE progression, looking for somebody who would
enjoy teaching A level Economics next academic year. The job would involve
teaching Sixth Form students, so teaching qualifications are not essential
in the first instance. We would like to recruit someone with a keen
intellectual interest in Economics who would enjoy working with young people
and would have no difficulty in communicating theories and ideas to our
students.

Postgraduate Taught and Research Scholarships
Japan: Scholarships for short-term research
Fully-funded scholarships for short-term research in Japan are available to
ten British postgraduate students under the JSPS Summer Programme. As well
as allowing individual students to gain important research experience
abroad, these scholarships could help establish your institution's
relationship with a Japanese partner.
About the programme:
Run by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in partnership with
British Council Japan, it provides opportunities for young pre- and
post-doctoral researchers to receive an orientation on Japanese culture and
research systems and to pursue research under the guidance of host
researchers at Japanese universities and research institutes over a period
of two months during the summer. Awards include international travel and an
allowance to cover room and board.
Eligibility:
Applicants must have UK nationality, citizenship, or permanent residence and
be of graduate student status (MA or PhD) or recent PhD holders. Their
research may be in any field.
