Office of Fair Trading: Summer Economic Internship Programme (closing
date Monday 7 May 2012)
The OFT is currently advertising for its Summer Economic Internship
Programme, aimed at undergraduates or graduates in economics, with a good
knowledge of and strong interest in microeconomics:
"The OFT summer economics internship programme is a 10 to 12 week placement
that runs from early or mid July 2012. The scheme is an excellent opportunity to
undertake paid employment while gaining invaluable experience working with
government economists.
OFT economists apply microeconomic principles to the real world. They
consider how competition is affected by agreements between firms, by firms'
conduct and by mergers. They provide advice to other departments on how
government policies can impact upon competition. They contribute to market
studies, look at ways to evaluate the OFT's work and carry out economic
research. The work is high profile and often receives press coverage."

American Graduate School in Paris
AGS is an independent, private, non-profit American institution of higher
education based in Paris, France. The School of International Relations at AGS
offers a two-year M.A. program in international relations and diplomacy.
The academic standard at AGS is high. The curriculum is both theoretical and
practical, and students are required to research, write and defend a thesis of
25,000-35,000 words. French is not required for admission, but it is a
graduation requirement and students study French with our partner institution,
the Alliance Française, and some earn a recognized diploma in French language
studies.
As well as earning an M.A. at AGS many of our students enroll in double
degree programs that we have with partner universities: ·
- M.A. in Peace and Conflict Resolution at Arcadia University,
USA ·
- M.A. in Diplomacy and Strategic Negotiations at the
Université de Paris XI, France ·
- LLM at the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, France
AGS draws students from around the world and the multicultural atmosphere in
the classroom is a learning experience in itself. Of course, Paris is an ideal
setting for the study of international relations as it is host to so many
international organizations, NGOs and embassies, as well as being in proximity
to other European capitals. AGS students take full advantage of this wealth of
opportunity: guest speakers address them in class, visits are organized and
internships are encouraged. We find that students who have studied with us leave
with a deeper understanding of world affairs, as they can now view them from a
more international perspective and with a better comprehension of why others do
things differently.
For students considering graduate school and who would like to add an
international dimension to their studies.Students who would like further
information should contact AGS Admissions Officer, Mr. Matthew Delabre:
matthew.delabre@ags.edu and should
also visit the American Graduate School in Paris website:

Bocconi PhD program in Economics and Finance
The PhD program follows the classical model: two years of courses
followed by (at least) two years of research. The first year is devoted to the
sequences in quantitative methods, microeconomics and either finance or
macroeconomics (according to the students’ interests), the second year to
advanced courses that bring the students to the frontier of research in several
fields.
The program, which is taught in English, combines rigorous training in
theoretical/methodological subjects and advanced techniques with special
attention to empirical research and policy issues. The faculty are first rate
active researchers at the frontier of their areas of expertise (most of them
affiliated to IGIER, a premier research centre).
More information is available at

Please find here the Call for the

Struggling to use Microsoft Excel? Join us at the free Excel
workshop!
Brought to you by Employ IT, a student-run initiative aiming to
transfer various IT skills to the students. With the majority of jobs requiring
at least minimal proficiency in IT knowledge, it’s imperative that University of
Essex students possess and are able to apply their IT skills. Such skills, in
today’s increasingly turbulent economic environment and highly competitive job
market, are now the distinguishing factors that employers look for. Moreover,
those who are equipped with these skills are also more likely to achieve in the
academic arena, obtain higher marks and thus also improve their employability.
We strive to contribute towards the goals of the University of Essex, outlined
in ‘Strategy 2009-10 to 2013-14’ to gain higher reputation, greater knowledge
transfer, student experience and research for our students. Our Microsoft office
workshop runs each Monday, and is completely free of charge.
Monday 31st January, in PC Lab G from 6 to 7pm.

Summer School in Romania
It is the 16th year now that the Luxembourg Institute for European and
International Studies (LIEIS), the Black Sea University Foundation and the
European Cultural Centre, Bucharest will organise an international summer
school in Romania, on the Black Sea coast. You may like to read the
executive summaries of the summer schools of the last years organised by
LIEIS in Romania on www.ieis.lu.
This year’s seminar is called "Beyond liberalism and socialism: searching
for a decent society" and will be held at Vama Veche, a youth resort at
about 50 km south of Constantza, on the border with Bulgaria, between 23
- 28 August 2010.
See flyer
See poster
The ambition of the 2010 seminar is to have a critical look at some key
societal models such as liberalism and socialism, their possible strengths
and shortcomings, as well as at a few more marginal concepts such as
utopianism, anarchism, communitarianism and the underlying philosophical
ideas: utilitarianism, materialism, idealism, and pessimism. What can be the
guiding principles and values in the quest for a decent society tolerance,
empathy, justice, benevolence and how to implement them?
As mentioned in the
flyer, there is a participation fee of 395 EUR that includes the costs
of lodging and meals at Vama Veche, as well as the course support. To this
amount, those interested to participate should add their international and
local transportation costs. On the other hand, a certain number of
scholarships to cover all these expenses will be offered by LIEIS. Students
seeking for a scholarship are requested to send either by email or post a
CV, a Letter of Intention, and a two page Essay on one of the seminar's main
topics (under Main Topics on the leaflet) to the European Cultural Centre in
Bucharest, by 12th June.
