Office of Fair Trading: Summer Economic Internship Programme (closing
date Monday 7 May 2012)
The OFT is currently advertising for its Summer Economic Internship
Programme, aimed at undergraduates or graduates in economics, with a good
knowledge of and strong interest in microeconomics:
"The OFT summer economics internship programme is a 10 to 12 week placement

undertake paid employment while gaining invaluable experience working with
government economists.

conduct and by mergers. They provide advice to other departments on how
government policies can impact upon competition. They contribute to market
studies, look at ways to evaluate the OFT's work and carry out economic

PhD funding available at Essex:
Topic: The impact of relocalised food systems on wellbeing
Background
Food produced with a light ecological footprint, as a collective community
effort, and distributed through short food chains could contribute to achieving
sustainability, resilience and improved wellbeing. This research will further
our understanding of the outcomes of such relocalisation initiatives in the East
of England on the wellbeing of individuals, households and communities. It will
also contribute to an understanding of the wider implications of relocalisation
– i.e. its implications for regional and national policy and economy. The
research will be part of a wider initiative to actively work together with
members of local groups in the East of England to achieve positive and
measurable outcomes in terms of betterment of local food production and
consumption.
Full details of this PhD project, starting in October 2012, are available here

Bocconi PhD program in Economics and Finance
The PhD program follows the classical model: two years of courses
followed by (at least) two years of research. The first year is devoted to the
sequences in quantitative methods, microeconomics and either finance or
macroeconomics (according to the students’ interests), the second year to
advanced courses that bring the students to the frontier of research in several
fields.
The program, which is taught in English, combines rigorous training in
theoretical/methodological subjects and advanced techniques with special
attention to empirical research and policy issues. The faculty are first rate
active researchers at the frontier of their areas of expertise (most of them
affiliated to IGIER, a premier research centre).
More information is available at
www.unibocconi.eu/phds (also on other Bocconi PhD programs).
Please find here the Call for the

submissions for a one-day Mainz Workshop in Labour Economics, which will take
place on April 30, 2012. The workshop intends to provide a platform for
discussion of new ideas in the structural modeling of labour market search and
matching frictions. Particular emphasis will be made on (but not restricted to)
unemployed search and benefit systems. Keynote speech of the workshop will be
delivered by Prof. Melvyn Coles (University of Essex). The deadline
for submissions is March 1, 2011. Authors of submitted papers will be notified

Call for papers: Research Workshop: "The future of trade unions"
The Departments of Economics at the University of Mainz and the University of
Mainz, Germany, invite papers for a one day workshop on 13 June 2012 in Mainz on
"The future of trade unions". Our keynote speaker is John Pencavel from Stanford
University. There is no doubt that trade unions influence economic
acivities of a country. There is quite some dispute, however, whether the
influence of trade unions is positive or negative. Critics and standard economic
theory emphasize that trade unions are responsible for unemployment as they push
up wages above the market clearing level. Supporters also stress positive
contributions: unions provide a "collective voice" (Freeman and Medoff, 1984),
they can be seen as the precursor of the modern welfare state (Brugiavini et
al., 2001, ch. II.2.1), they play a " constructive role <...> in providing
individuals with an opportunity to participate in fashioning their work
environment" (Pencavel, 2005) or they collect information, improve occupational
health and safety at the workplace and thereby increase output and welfare of an
economy (Donado and Wälde, 2011), to name just a few positive examples.
It is the objective of this workshop to bring together economists who also see
"the good face" of trade unions (or of any social group more generally
speaking). Society is more than a group of individuals, it is rather a group of
groups who mostly contribute in some useful way to society. We welcome analyses
of union behaviour (or social groups more generally) both from an empirical and
theoretical perspective. The deadline for submissions is 22 April
2012. Authors of selected papers will be notified of the decision shortly
thereafter. The Department of Economics can cover travel and accommodation costs
for all speakers and discussants. Please send your paper as an email
attachment to Alejandro Donado.

aims at stimulating exchange of ideas in the theoretical and empirical modeling
of macroeconomic aspects as related to trade and growth. The keynote speech of
the workshop will be delivered by Samuel S. Kortum (University of Chicago).
The deadline for submissions is June 10, 2012. Authors of submitted papers will
be notified of the decision beginning of July. For submission, please send your
paper as an email attachment to Silke Brandau. We can cover
accommodation and reimburse travel expenses for the authors whose contributions
were accepted to the workshop.

on emotions are highly welcome as well.
The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2012. Please send your paper or
extended abstract (about 2 pages) as an email attachment to

be notified of the decision shortly thereafter. We can cover travel
and accommodation costs for all speakers of the Research Workshop.

Global Firms, Global Finance and Global Inequalities Conference - Call for
papers
Global Political Economy Network: Global Firms, Global Finance and Global
Inequalities
Conference Venue: Loughborough University, UK Dates 25-26 April, 2012.
Call for papers Background: Global capitalism is again facing a popular
backlash in advanced countries, focused upon the disparities between the ‘1 per
cent’ – largely associated with the finance sector – and the rest of the Global
population. Yet there is still little consensus about the effects of
globalisation upon income distribution – either within countries or between
countries. Rising inequality in the Anglo-Saxon countries, and increasing
unemployment in continental Europe, led to a political backlash against global
trade in the 1990s. However, traditional analyses, based upon the neoclassical
model of the global economy, failed to find a link to trade with developing
countries, since traded commodity prices did not seem to be shifting. In
addition, inequality was also rising within many developing countries, which was
contrary to the simple version of the Stolper-Samuelson theorem.
More recent analyses, based upon intra- and inter-firm trade, outsourcing and
networking, have suggested that these early conclusions may have been premature.
It is argued that many effects initially attributed to technological progress
may, in fact, reflect selective outsourcing of certain labour-intensive
processes. In addition, global financial liberalisation has led to strong shifts
in costs of, access to and returns to finance in different parts of the World,
whose effects on inequalities have not fully been explored. The role of the
finance sector – both in terms of its extreme concentrations of income on the
highest earners, and in terms of its alleged failure to support development
among poorer groups – is at the heart of current debate.
Call for papers on the themes of:
- North-North capital market integration and tax/subsidy
competition.
- North-South capital market integration.
- Different labour market institutions and responses to global
shifts.
- Labour market effects of outsourcing and FDI.
- Degree of competition and income distribution.
- Finance and access to education in North and South.
- Access to finance as a driver to FDI.
- Appropriate policy responses.
Papers on other related themes will also be considered.
Keynote speakers: Confirmed Rodney Falvey, Bond University, Australia. Carl
Davidson, Michigan State University, USA. Udo Kreickemeier, University of
Tübingen, Germany. Ray Riezman, University of Iowa, USA.

This conference brings together scholars and practitioners deeply
knowledgeable about recent Latin American crises and rescue experiences, with
people actively interested in the current European crisis. The Brady rescue in
Latin America in the 1980s is frequently quoted as a model for Europe on the
basis of inadequate knowledge. But other recent crises, in particular Argentina
and Ecuador, contain interesting lessons well worth careful analysis and debate.
