Economics research at Essex

Cutting-edge research in a friendly, lively environment

We actively research in a number of fields in economics. The diversity of our research enables us to offer a number of courses and modules, supervise students undertaking research in a range of topics and offer advice to businesses and policy makers.

We are renowned for our unique atmosphere where cutting-edge research is produced in a friendly, cohesive and lively environment. Seminars, workshops and conferences are well-attended, lively affairs that complement our publications and related activities.

A national centre for economic and social research

The University of Essex is the leading university in the UK for economic and social research and a focal point for national funding. Our Department works closely with the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) and many of our researchers collaborate on projects, applying economic theory to real-life situations.

Offering consultancy services

Many of our researchers are working with local, national and international organisations offering their expertise to develop business and policy, which is testimony to the quality of work. In addition, a number of staff are editors or sit on editorial boards for leading professional journals.

Host to some of the most prominent economists in the world

Our department plays host, or has hosted, some of the most prominent economists in the world, including Chris Pissarides who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2010. We are seen as leading the way in a number of economic fields for example searching and matching and networks. Our research interests cover all major fields of economics.
