In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department of Economics at
Essex has been ranked as joint third among all departments in the UK for
Economics and Econometrics

The Economics Department at the University of Essex has been awarded the
maximum 5-star grade in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Only
three other UK Economics departments share this grand success with Essex,
and they are University of Warwick, London School of Economics and
University College London. This means that the University of Essex is now
the top-ranked university in the UK for social science research, with only
Essex obtaining the maximum 5-star grade for its Sociology, Government and
Economics Departments.
