Postgraduate Research Degrees: More Information

Supervision

The Department is able to offer supervision on a wide range of applied and theoretical topics. Although we do not provide a precise list of topics, we can usually supervise students working in the following areas:

  • microeconomics
  • macroeconomics
  • industrial organisation
  • econometrics
  • economic history
  • labour economics
  • financial economics
  • management economics
  • international economics

Please use our staff pages for more detailed information on the research interests of current members of the academic staff.

Working Environment

The Department maintains a lively, friendly and informal atmosphere for research, into which research students are fully integrated. There is, for instance, plenty of opportunity for students to interact with all members of staff, not just their own supervisors, and, of course, with each other. Much of the Department's best work originates in its coffee room, shared by staff and students!

The Department aims to provide shared office space for all its research students. A typical office has desk space for four students and a networked PC.

All PhD and MPhil students participate in the weekly Research Strategy Seminar, at which they present their own work and discuss the ongoing or completed research of other students. In addition all research students and staff have the opportunity to present their ideas at the weekly Wednesday Workshop. There is also a weekly Departmental Seminar at which academic speakers from outside the University are invited to present their work.

The University is also home to the Institute for Social and Economic Research and the Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents. The presence of these bodies, each of which runs its own seminar series, provides further scope for interaction with other students and academics.
