Postgraduate research

The department offers two routes to a research degree in Economics:

You will study in a vibrant research environment as recognised by the joint third place awarded to Essex Economics in the in the most recent national research ranking (RAE 2008).

Located at the heart of an internationally acknowledged social science network, you will receive advanced research training, expert supervision to support progression through the programme, and top quality research facilities.

We understand how important it is for research students to have access to computers and quiet space to work. There are also lots of opportunities to join the vibrant research culture in the department, whether that's through weekly seminars or discussions with academics in the coffee room.

Supervisory strengths

We offer expert supervision in a variety of areas of theoretical and applied economics and econometrics and have research strengths in a number of economic fields.

Doctoral Training Centre

The Department plays a leading role in the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre at Essex. We have six fully-funded studentships available for high quality students working in economics and eight available for those working in advanced quantitative methods.

As part of the Doctoral Training Centre, Economics offers pathways in:

  • Economics
  • Econometrics

We are also involved with the Applied Social and Economic Research pathway, led by the Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER).

PhD studies are fully funded for either three or four years of doctoral training. Full details of what funding is available to you is on our scholarship finder.

Prospective postgraduates are welcome to visit one of our open days to come and meet members of staff and to find out more about the department.
