Biography
David Reinstein joined the department in September 2006 from UC Berkeley. His interests include altruism, social pressure, psychology, institutions, information, and market structure. In particular, he studies how these impact on consumer behaviour as well as social outcomes (efficiency and distribution), as in his March 2008 Essex Discussion Paper (#651) with Joon Song: Efficient Consumer Altruism and Fair Trade. David's current research uses observational data and laboratory experimentation to examine the motivation for charitable giving and to measure the extent to which a donor substitutes one gift for another. A recent Essex discussion paper on the subject is Does One Contribution Come at the Expense of Another? Empirical Evidence on Substitution Between Charitable Donations (Essex discussion paper 618). Also see his paper: Substitution Between (and Motivations for) Charitable Contributions: An Experimental Study (Essex discussion paper 648). David has a recent publication in the Journal of Industrial Economics on the influence of critical reviews on a film's box office takings.
