Research Assessment Exercise, 2001
The results of the 2001
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) -
which is conducted by the UK government's Higher Education Funding Councils to
evaluate the quality of research in about sixty subject areas (based upon
academic peer review) - were published on 14th December 2001.
The Essex
Economics Department was awarded a 5-star grade for its quality of
research (5-star being the highest possible grade). The Department is one of only four Economics departments to have
received the top grade.
The Head of Department, Professor Abhinay Muthoo, commented:
"I am delighted
that the RAE has confirmed Essex's reputation as
one of the best research departments
in economics in the UK. Essex has always (since its earliest days, almost
forty years ago) attracted top economists, and I expect that it will
continue to do so. I am confident that the department will maintain and
further
enhance its reputation as one of the world's leading economics departments."
NOTE: In conjunction with the result of
24/24 awarded to the department by
the UK's Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for the quality of its teaching
this means that the Essex Economics Department is one
of only three
Economics departments to have received the top marks in both research and
teaching.
