3 December 2004: The inaugural Lipsey Lectures
Professor Debraj Ray delivered the inaugural Lipsey Lectures on 2nd and 3rd December 2004.  

2002

28 May 2002: The Guardian: Essex Economics in the UK Top Ten
The Guardian's league table for Economics shows that Essex has one of the top ten departments in the UK.
Professor Muthoo, Head of Department, comments: "While we are delighted to be ranked at 7, between the LSE and Nottingham, we are always striving to do better." 

2001

14 December 2001: Research Assessment Exercise
The Economics Department at the University of Essex has been awarded a 5-star grade in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Only three other UK Economics departments share this grand success with Essex, and they are University of Warwick, London School of Economics and University College London. This means that the University of Essex is now the top-ranked university in the UK for social science research, with only Essex obtaining the maximum 5-star grade for its Sociology, Government and Economics Departments.

15 November 2001: QAA Subject Review of Economics at Essex
The Head of Department is pleased to announce that a mark of 24 (the highest possible score) has been awarded for Economics at Essex:
