Q-Step Affiliate status

We are one of three universities in the UK to receive Q-Step Affiliate status, meaning you can develop your quantitative skills by taking a specialised degree pathway or receiving a student bursary to go on a quantitative work placement.

At Essex, accounting and finance isn’t just about trading stocks or maintaining balance sheets. Our professionally accredited courses develop your ability to solve complex business problems and make responsible, ethical decisions that ensure organisations thrive, not just survive.

We equip you with the inter-personal skills needed to get the best from your team and our finance group is one of the largest and most respected in the UK. We’re ranked in the UK’s top 20 for finance and our finance courses have 91% student satisfaction (NSS, 2016).

All of our accounting and finance courses are based at our Colchester Campus, just an hour from the City, where you benefit from state-of-the-art facilities in our new zero-carbon building.

Our accounting and finance courses

You have the option to undertake a placement year (except language courses) or study abroad with all of our courses. Our common first year provides an all-round business education and our modular degree structure lets you tailor your course to your career aims.

Bloomberg trading floor

Our Bloomberg Financial Market Lab, otherwise known as our virtual trading floor, brings the real world of finance into the classroom. We offer direct use of industry-leading Bloomberg data, information and analytics for our finance courses, providing students with access to the same software used by traders and business analysts worldwide. The trading floor also features industry-leading software X_TRADER, where you can trade multiple markets from a single screen.

Expert teaching staff

Our accounting and finance faculties are home to some of the world’s most influential thinkers. Accounting expert Professor Prem Sikka is frequently cited in The Financial Times, BBC News and the Guardian.

You’re taught by world-renowned academics and practitioners; we have specialists in almost every aspect of accounting and finance. Their teaching is informed by research into current business issues, so you experience an education at the cutting-edge of your discipline.

CFA and IMC scholarships

If you want to work in investment management, qualifying as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) is one way to give your CV the edge. The University of Essex can offer a limited number of scholarships to students wishing to sit the CFA Level One exam.

We can also offer a scholarship for the IMC Advantage Programme, a mandatory requirement for many UK investment firms.

You can read more about both schemes on our fees and scholarships page.
