Charlotte Smith
First year, PhD in Management Course title
Having studied for a research masters (MRes) in management at Essex, I
quickly realised this was the place for me to do my doctorate as not only is
Essex Business School superb in my field and blessed with some of the best
critical management studies scholars around, they are also amongst some of the
most friendly and supportive people I have come across. A supervisor and friend
suggested this was the best place in the country for me to study in my field and
they certainly are not wrong.
I have found settling into my PhD very comfortable and have enjoyed the many
events that both the School and the University as a whole put on at the
beginning of term. I feel the School has offered lots of opportunities to meet
other first year PhD students.
When not studying, I can usually be found filling time in the Blues Caf with
several cups of coffee and a newspaper. It offers the perfect place to take a
break and has a lovely buzz within it which I think shows the culture of
University life at its best.
Coming to Essex has quickly made me realise that I want to pursue a career in
academia upon finishing my doctorate. The School has been great in facilitating
this by offering me the chance to teach, as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA)
teaching second year students in Organisational Behaviour, and providing me with
the relevant training while allowing me to learn and develop as a person in a
supportive environment.
The best thing about my time here is that I have met some lovely people who I
am sure will be friends for life.
