Sean Purcell

Masters in Public Enterprise and Management (MPEM) - 2008
After completing his studies Sean began working as Head of Business
Development at South East Essex College.
Essex Business School is well run, supportive and therefore an excellent
place to study. I settled easily into academic life as I have a background in
education so understood policies, procedures and support structures. I
especially enjoyed the international flavour of the lectures and seminars, and
by meeting (and living with) people from other cultures, I got a greater
appreciation for the international element of my studies. I also enjoyed the
opportunities to network and meet policy makers and entrepreneurs from the
locality.
My dissertation is based on strategy within Further Education and we learnt
about aspects of strategy that have been invaluable to me. I have found what I
learnt about the issues of skills shortages and regional economic development
particularly useful and feel my degree has helped improve my knowledge and
employability.
Southend is a great place to study and I really enjoy spending warm spring
afternoons in Leigh-on-Sea. Starting again and having to make brand new friends
took me back to when I first went to university but meeting new people,
socialising and becoming a postgraduate student was enjoyable and rewarding.
