Research training
The aim of the EBS School is to provide high quality research training in a
stimulating intellectual environment.
Research undertaken for the PhD research degree must be both rigorous and
methodical. It must constitute a systematic, careful inquiry or examination to
explore new information and relationships and/or to expand or verify existing
knowledge for some specified purpose.
Depending on their individual experience, research students may be required
to attend the Research Methodologies and Methods module, complete specific
coursework and review relevant literatures. They also may be required to sit and
pass examinations in one or more of the specified module. The exact training
requirements will be decided by the supervisors.
During the first year of the PhD research programme, the School expects
students to take part in the PhD Research Methodologies module, which is
specifically designed for the needs of new PhD students. This module explores
issues in research epistemology and methodology and provides students with a
detailed insight into specific research methods.
As part of the research training, research students are also expected to take
part in the various School and group research seminars.
Once a year research students are normally required to give a presentation about
their research to fellow staff and students.
