Prospective PhD Students
Welcome to the PhD programme of Essex Business School. Our
primary goal is to prepare outstanding students to undertake
cutting edge research in the areas of Accounting,
Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Finance, Management.
PhD programmes and supervision are offered at both the
Colchester campus and the Southend campus of Essex Business
School. Colchester Campus offers integrated PhD programmes
as well as traditional PhDs in the areas of Accounting, Finance and Management,
offering a wealth of facilities for all our doctoral students.
The Southend campus
focuses on a broad research areas of Entrepreneurship &
Innovation, which gives students the opportunity to specialise
in entrepreneurship,
marketing and strategic
management, and
international business and
economics.
A distinctive feature of the School is its truly international
character. We currently have approximately 130 research students
who come from at least 14 countries and five continents.
Similarly, Essex Business School has over 90 staff who come from
a similar range of countries.
Please also see our page for current
PhD students.
Research Excellence
Essex Business School has an international reputation for
research excellence as evidenced by members' publication output,
esteem, and other scholarly indicators. In the 2008 RAE EBS was
ranked 2nd overall in the UK in Accounting and Finance subject
area. Having achieved a 5 rating in the previous 2001 RAE. In
2008 the number of staff submitted to the RAE at 30.5ftes was
nearly double the number of research active staff in 2001. This
growth in staff has been accompanied by a shift of focus from
primarily accounting-based research to a spread across the four
fields of academic activity.
Supervision
Students are normally assigned two supervisors in their
chosen research area. They then work closely with these faculty
members in an interactive environment where students receive
feedback on their ideas and findings on a regular basis.
Students are encouraged to develop their own research ideas
independently.

are encouraged to use.
