Essex Business School has an international reputation for cutting edge
research in Accounting, Finance, Management and Entrepreneurship. Our reputation
was confirmed in the results of the 2008 RAE.

Both theoretical and applied research can be found in Essex Business School.
Much of our research addresses important issues and problems faced by commercial
businesses, public sector bodies and not-for-profit organisations. Examples of
current research projects include:
A team of Management Group
lecturers are involved in the
Cities 2020 Research Programme, run by the
Work Foundation programme of
research focusing on the drivers of urban growth as our economy climbs out of
recession. Through research reports and policy papers, the research hopes to
answer questions such as:
- What will the geography of the recovery be over the next
decade in the UK?
- What factors will enable cities to be economically and
socially sustainable during economic recovery and the period to
2020?
- What must policymakers and cities do now to ensure success
in 2020?

This interplay of research interests sets the stage for their involvement in
research for the Cities 2020 Research Programme. Through varying research they
are hoping to discover how cities can capitalise on their 'anchor institutions',
such as universities, hospitals and museums which are vital sources of
leadership, skills and jobs.
The researchers are working closely with the
Work Foundation, as well as
Essex County and Colchester Borough Councils, for this project.
Steffen Boehm of the
Management Group has been
funded by the British Academy to research 'The social, economic and
environmental impacts of carbon markets: The case of the clean development
mechanism (CDM)'

Sanjay Banerji of the
Finance Group is the
recipient of support from the ESRC (jointly with a colleague from India funded
by the ICSSR) for a project on 'Evolution of Financial Systems architecture in
the Developing and Emerging Market Economies of South and South East Asia'
Prof Jay Mitra of the
Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Group is leading market research on international business strategy related
to Chinese businesses in Europe. This research is funded by
Shandong Weigao Group Medical Polymer Products
Ltd, China.
