Current PhD students
Welcome to the PhD programme of Essex Business School. Our primary goal is to
prepare outstanding students to undertake cutting edge research in the areas of
Accounting, Entrepreneurship& Innovation, Finance, Management, and Marketing.
PhD programmes and supervision are offered at both the Colchester campus and
the
Southend campus of Essex Business School.
Students are normally assigned two supervisors in their chosen research area.
They then work closely with these faculty members in an interactive environment
where students receive feedback on their ideas and findings on a regular basis.
Students are encouraged to develop their own research ideas independently. The
School has a wide range of specialist databases (eg Datastream, Bankscope, SDC
Platinum) that students are encouraged to use.
A range of
funding opportunities and scholarships are also available to qualifying
applicants. The normal entry requirement is a good merit (or average of at least
65%) at a recognised Masters' course in the UK or equivalent.
All students in their first year are required to undertake
training in
research methods which is assessed.

Integrated PhD
We also offer an Integrated
PhD for students who have no research background. Details of course
structure and rules of assessment can be found on your
Moodle pages and
here.
Success Rate
Our efforts to nurture students and develop their talents are rewarded by
students' high success rate in the job market. Many of our students succeed in
finding
appointments in leading UK (eg
Bristol, Durham and Royal Holloway) and overseas (eg Chinese and Greek)
universities while others find employment in the private sector.
For details on admission and scholarship opportunities, please
contact our PhD Administrator,
Mrs. Juliet Sexton.
Funding
Make sure you check whether there are any scholarships available from the
University, ESRC, or other by looking at the
funding opportunities available to qualifying applicants.
The University has created a
Reference Guide for all the funding options available to prospective/current
postgraduate students. This information changes over the course of the year
depending upon the funding available, so remember to check it periodically.
