Finance Group

Jerry Coakley - Head of Finance Group

The Finance Group has expanded extremely rapidly in recent years and now comprises 16 members of staff (with one unfilled vacancy). It is led by Profs Jerry Coakley and John Nankervis. All Group members are research active and 15 staff were submitted to the 2008 RAE Accounting and Finance sub-panel in which Essex was ranked 2nd in the UK.

See A-Z list for information on our academic staff and research interests.

Research in the Group spans a range of topics with particular strengths in financial econometrics, corporate finance, asset pricing, banking and international finance, and behavioural finance. Staff have published in top finance (e.g. Journal of Finance, JFQA), economics (e.g. International Economics Review, Review of Economics and Statistics), econometrics (e.g. Econometrica, Journal of Econometrics) and management (e.g. Strategic Management Review) journals. Research activities are managed through the Essex Finance Centre.

The Group runs three specialist undergraduate BSc degree courses in Finance, Financial Management and Banking and Finance and contributes to the Accounting and Finance and other courses. At postgraduate level, the Group runs very successful MSc degree courses in Finance, International Finance, Finance and Management, Banking and Finance and Financial Engineering and Risk Management (from 2009-10) and contributes to the MSc Accounting and Finance and other courses.

Finally, the Group supervises a large number of PhD students. Its MSc/PhD programs have been awarded ESRC 1+3 recognition. Most of its students awarded PhDs since 2001 have taken up academic positions, both in leading UK (eg Bristol, Durham, University of London) and overseas universities (Xiamen and South West Universities in China) as well as in industry.
