the business school for a new world...
We have been promoting high quality research and engaging teaching for over
22 years. Essex Business School brings together four core business disciplines -
Accounting, Marketing,
Entrepreneurship and Global Strategy,
Finance
and Management, Marketing and
Organisation.
The School offers degrees in accounting, entrepreneurship, finance,
management, and marketing, and we have recently launched a flagship,
full-time MBA course. Teaching in the School is informed
by a broad range of social science theories and concepts, and these are applied
to some of the pressing issues facing organisations in the public and private
sector. We want to answer the questions being asked today, but also anticipating
the issues of tomorrow, in light of socio-economic change, global politics and
climate change.
The School has an international reputation for high quality research across
the whole range of business subjects. We have four research centres in
Accounting,
Finance,
Marketing,
Entrepreneurship and Global Strategy and

Approach to Teaching
Students of today are leaders of tomorrow. Our goal is to
equip our students with the knowledge and skills to effectively respond to the
complex and ever-changing business issues, and understand the broader
implications of their actions as an individual and as a business. We focus not
only on the core business disciplines, but also on the wider social, ethical and
environmental implications to current business strategy and practice. This
teaching is set within our diverse, international faculty and student body.
Academic Staff
Essex Business School is comprised of over 80 members of staff. Our academic
staff are made up of over 23 different countries from around the globe. Our
research covers areas as diverse as analysis of the financial implications of
bank bailouts to the effect of smells in the work environment.
Research
Essex Business School has an international reputation for research
excellence. In the
2008 RAE, EBS was ranked 2nd overall in the
UK in Accounting and Finance subject area. We achieved a 5 rating in the
previous 2001 RAE. In 2008 the number of staff submitted to the RAE at 30.5ftes
was nearly double the number of research active staff in 2001. This growth in
staff has been accompanied by a shift of focus from primarily accounting-based
research to a spread across the four fields of academic activity.
Location
The School is located on both the Colchester and Southend campuses.
