Digital media at the University of Essex

Five good reasons to engage with digital media

Over the last few years social networking and digital media have become invaluable tools in marketing and communication. They can be especially useful for the education sector for the following reasons:

  1. Worldwide audience
Social media provides us with instant access to a large audience around the world. Whether it is information about our new gym facility or a ground-breaking piece of research - social media can put your message out to an audience of millions, in text or media format.
  2. Low cost
Social media can be very cost effective; our events, new courses or our research advances etc can all be promoted via our social networking sites bringing advertising costs down.
  3. Instant two-way communication
Social media provides a platform for a our communities to interact with each other. Our prospective students, current students, alumni, staff and the wider community can communicate with like-minded individuals and have their questions answered, make friends and network.
  4. Engaging on a new level
Social media provides us with an alternative, interesting and less formal medium to engage with our students and stakeholders. Anything can be displayed within seconds from a vodcast, thought, event, webpage, photo or discussion.
  5. We can't afford to miss out!
With so many people around the world engaged in social media, it makes sense for us to be a part of it. Many universities and businesses in the UK and around the world have a presence on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. This means that we can connect with our students (past, present or prospective) and be accessible through a new, exciting channel.
