Introduction
Meet our Head
As part of our Research Discovery vodcast series,
Head of our Department, Dr Alison Rowlands, discusses her research inspirations and interests.
Since our Department of History
was founded in 1972, we have gone on to develop a strong,
individual character and a distinctive approach to the study of
history. Our research was rated second in the UK in the last
Research Assessment Exercise (December 2008) and many of our
academics are at the cutting edge of their fields. This gives
you the opportunity to be taught by leading experts. According
to the National Student Survey in 2011, 93 per cent of our
students were satisfied with their course. We ensure that
we provide a supportive and engaging environment for you to
learn in.
Our teaching covers the period of 1500 to the present day and
covers a wide geographic range. A variety of single and joint
honours courses are on offer, and you are able to choose modules
to match your own interests or combine your enthusiasm for
history with another subject. We are particularly interested in
comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to history and in
combining social, cultural and political history.
Our strengths
- High student satisfaction
- Second in the UK for research
- Varied and flexible degree programmes
- Staff who are experts in their field
- Friendly and supportive environment
