Introduction
Since its foundation in 1972, the Department of History has combined innovative
approaches to the study of history with a strong emphasis on small-group teaching and an inclusive departmental community
which puts students and their intellectual journey at the heart of all that we do. As a result we score highly on both the
quality of the research published by our teaching staff (we came joint second in the UK in the last Research Assessment Exercise
in December 2008), and on the quality of our students’ experience; according to the 2012 National Student Survey, 97 per cent of
our students were satisfied with the quality of their course.
We offer four single and ten joint honours courses, covering the period c.1500 to the present day, allowing you to study
history on its own or with another subject. Our courses give you a high degree of flexibility in your module choices and the
opportunity to develop valuable skills in research, communication, and critical thinking.
