School Overview

The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) was established in 2007. The School builds upon the success, long experience and the established and internationally recognised reputations of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering. In recent years considerable overlap had developed in the courses that both departments offered. As a result it was decided to merge the departments so that we could offer a broad range of relevant and exciting set of courses, well suited to securing employment in industry and elsewhere.

We are a leading School in both Computer Science and Electronic Systems. Current UK league table rankings include:

In the most recent National Student Survey, Essex is ranked fifth in “Student Satisfaction” for the subject "Computer Science". The data, collected in 2008, shows that 95% of our undergraduate Computer Science students classed themselves as “satisfied”.

By following the links from this page on the left you will be able to find out more about our programmes, career opportunities and what it is like to be a student here at Essex. For example, under Student Profiles, you will find out about some of our recent students, what they studied and what they are doing now.

Undergraduate Degrees

idormOur undergraduate degrees (BSc and BEng) are Honours degrees normally taken over 3 years full-time. Some of our degrees (in electronics) require you to have a suitable mathematics qualification, but for all our other degrees we accept a wide-range of subjects as entry qualifications, provided achievement is at the appropriate level. Of course, we also have an English language requirement for students whose mother tongue is not English.

We welcome applications from mature students (over the age of 21) and we are flexible about the qualifications that we will accept for entry, especially for those with experience in industry. If you are aged in your early 20s we would normally expect you to have qualifications close to meeting our normal entry requirements, but we are prepared to relax this for older mature students.

Our courses are organised within 3 themes:

  • Computer Science
  • Computer Systems Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering

We also offer a BSc in Computational Finance.

Postgraduate Taught Degrees (Masters)Group of Computing Students

We offer taught MSc degrees over 12 months in several subjects. These degrees require you to attend classes (lectures and laboratory classes) and complete both coursework and examinations, and a major individual project. The normal entry requirement for these degrees is a Bachelors degree or equivalent at a suitable level and in a suitable subject area. Of course, we also have an English language requirement for students whose mother tongue is not English.  Read more

Postgraduate Research Degrees

We offer research degrees at two different levels:

  • Master of Research degrees over 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time. These degrees require you to complete an individual research project and submit a dissertation, but they also include some taught material appropriate to the research topic.

  • Doctor of Philosophy over 3-4 years full-time. These degrees are entirely research based (that is there is no taught component, although students registered on these degrees may attend classes in suitable subject areas if they wish).

For entry to a research degree we require a very high standard of Bachelors degree or a good standard of Masters degree, and, of course, an English language requirement for students whose mother tongue is not English. Read more
