Doctoral Programme
To register for a PhD (part-time or
full time) you should have a 2(i) degree or equivalent
in a relevant discipline and should have gained,
or expect to gain before starting the studentship,
a masters-level degree or equivalent research training
in a discipline appropriate to the Digital Lifestyle
centre’s research activities.
Chimera, the Institute for Social and Technical
Research at the University of Essex has a
postgraduate research programme recognised by both
the ESRC and EPSRC as a centre for full-time and
part-time research studentships including
industry-funded CASE awards. We are open to
applications from prospective students who wish to
study the interactions between technologies and
society in a lively post-disciplinary research
oriented environment. Candidates must exhibit the
potential to excel in incisive and innovative
thinking which can help to understand the social and
technical dynamics of societal change and/or develop
and test new societal tools and applications. Our
research activities and students are clustered into
two groups but cross-group projects and student
research programmes are actively encouraged. For
