When you join us as a postgraduate researcher, you will have the benefit of:

  • World-class researchers as supervisors – and plenty of contact hours
  • First-class research facilities, personal equipment and working conditions
  • A wide choice of research areas in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering
  • High-quality skills training – to add extra sparkle to your CV
  • Opportunities for working/teaching – to earn some extra cash
  • The chance to publish and travel – our students are our colleagues
  • The possibility of scholarships and studentships for overseas students
  • Careers advice and career planning

We offer three research degrees: PhD (three years full-time), MPhil (two years full-time), and MSc by Dissertation (one year full-time), as well as a PhD via the Integrated Programme, which is intended for those students who wish to complete both a taught Masters degree and a doctorate.  Part-time and distance learning study options are also available.  (Note that, although in exceptional circumstances the research write-up can also be accomplished within the period of degree tuition, it is assumed that all research degrees will require an additional write-up period of up to one year, during which reduced (completion) fees are charged).

We will be pleased to assist you, if you would like to apply. Please contact:

The Postgraduate Administrator (Admissions) at csee@essex.ac.uk – for assistance with your application, documents, and general enquiries.

Please feel free to contact any academic within the School, if you wish to find out more about a research area – or as a potential supervisor. We will help match your interests with our own – and we will work with you to develop an outline topic within your chosen research area.
