Staff news:
Simon Lucas has accepted an invitation to be Program Co-Chair for
Parallel
Problem Solving from Nature (PPSN) 2008. PPSN is one of the most well
established and highly regarded conferences in the field of evolutionary and
natural computation, and has run biennially since 1990.
EPSRC CASE Studentship Awarded
Matthew Thomas, a PhD student in the department, has been awarded an EPSRC CASE
studentship with British Telecom, starting in October. He will be working on
“Investigation and Simplification of Interior Gateway Routing Protocols for Next
Generation IP Networks” with Gabriele Corliano at BT – his supervisors at Essex
are Dr. David Hunter and Dr. Martin Reed. Before coming here to study for a PhD,
Matthew worked for seven years as a contractor for Cisco Systems in Brussels and
Europe, and had extensive experience with the Internet and routing protocols. At
the end of August, Matthew and his two academic supervisors submitted an
Internet Draft to the IETF describing OSPF-lite, a branch version of the OSPF
routing protocol which will reduce the cost of running a network.
