About the course

What marketing and business challenges do organisations face at different stages of their growth? How do different cultures and countries impact marketing strategy?

Our MSc International Marketing and Entrepreneurship explores the theoretical and practical approaches to marketing planning, strategy, communications and customer-centred business. You do not need to have previously studied marketing to undertake this course.

You examine how these topics apply to public and private organisations in varying stages of formation, growth or change management, in different international and cultural environments. We expose you to cutting-edge marketing techniques, encourage your creativity and develop your critical thinking, analytical, strategic and leadership skills.

Topics include:

  • the marketing communications mix, including: advertising; public relations; personal selling; sales promotion and direct marketing
  • marketing strategies, including product, pricing, promotion and distribution strategies
  • marketing planning and implementation
  • new product development
  • supply chain management and operations
  • branding
  • ethical issues
  • theories and practices of entrepreneurship

You’re taught by a combination of guest lecturers, policy-makers and practitioners who bring together a global community of criticism, thought and innovation.

Our expert staff draw upon both academic and practical marketing experience to provide you with a well-rounded business education. Their work is backed by social science theory and tackles current business issues in: business ethics and corporate social responsibility; organisation studies; leadership and strategy; finance and banking; risk management; and international management.

Specialist facilities

This course is based at our Southend Campus, in the centre of Southend-on-Sea.

You benefit from excellent study facilities, PC labs and ample space for working in groups or individually. Essex Business School also provides study skills support to help you reach your academic potential.

Southend-on-Sea has excellent transport links with London, by rail or road, and Europe, via London Southend Airport. As well as the seafront, the town has fantastic social facilities, including the world famous Southend Pier, a bowling alley and an array of bars and restaurants.

Our graduates manage marketing activities in organisations of all sizes, or apply their skills to their own businesses. In 2014, 87% of all of our Masters graduates were in work or further study within six months of graduating.

We provide you with career support and guidance throughout your education. The School’s employability team works closely with the University’s Employability and Careers Centre to provide you with bespoke advice on topics such as CV writing and access to work experience.

Example structure

Postgraduate study is the chance to take your education to the next level. The combination of compulsory and optional modules means our courses help you develop extensive knowledge in your chosen discipline, whilst providing plenty of freedom to pursue your own interests. Our research-led teaching is continually evolving to address the latest challenges and breakthroughs in the field, therefore to ensure your course is as relevant and up-to-date as possible your core module structure may be subject to change.

For many of our courses you’ll have a wide range of optional modules to choose from – those listed in this example structure are, in many instances, just a selection of those available. Our Programme Specification gives more detail about the structure available to our current postgraduate students, including details of all optional modules.

Year 1

Develop your critical understanding of the strategic and functional aspects of international marketing activities of firms of varying sizes and industries. You explore the roles of external and internal environments against key international marketing decisions such as modes of foreign market entry and market selection, or the design and implementation of marketing mix approaches at the international level.

International marketing plans help organisations to plan promotional and sales activity across different countries. They provide valuable insights into the characteristics of international markets and help organise activity and resource. In this module, you complete an international marketing plan instead of a dissertation. You learn how to make strategic recommendations for international marketing activity, including decisions on how to apply the marketing mix, targeting and positioning, competitor strategy and plans for entering new markets.

Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to manage product development projects in an international business environment, with particular focus on product design methodologies and project management techniques. You explore the hard side of managing global product development projects and the soft issues such as idea generation/selection and teamwork that must be dealt with in order to ensure success of the product development projects.

Matching the ability to supply a product or service with customer demand is vital for any organisation. Excess supply can lead to wastage and increased costs, but too little can irritate customers and result in lost revenue. Supply chain management is a complex and challenging task, but, done right, it can create significant competitive advantage. This module explores how organisations manage their product range and operations to best align supply with demand in a global environment, categorised by expanding product variety, increasing outsourcing, and continuous advances in business analytics. You explore areas such as industry competition, resource allocation, organisational learning and competitive dynamics.

This module enables you to master important elements in marketing strategy implementation. You address cross cultural issues and perspectives on international marketing, focusing on buyer behaviour in both B2B and B2C contexts. You explore international market research, the implications for product and service management, marketing communications, channel management, new product development, services marketing and retailing.

Gain the key skills and competencies to carry out management research or prepare a comprehensive business plan, suitable for the completion of a Masters level programme. You address the philosophical issues underlying management research, and discover how to select methods and judge the quality and value of research outcomes.

This module equips you with a critical understanding of a range of economic, sociological, psychological and managerial theories of enterprise creation and development. Live examples, case studies and journal articles show how these theories apply in practice to real business situations. Working in groups and individually, you have the opportunity to suggest strategies for responding to the issues raised in these case studies. Topics include new business creation, innovative growth and the impact of entrepreneurship on economic and social development.

This module helps you to identify and understand the main business functions that can support an entrepreneur when determining whether there is sufficient opportunity to launch a new venture.  You acquire the critical, transferable and practical skills required to create or manage a new or entrepreneurial organisation. You explore how new businesses are developed and managed, including spin-offs from large firms and social enterprises, and learn how to identify new business opportunities. Topics include: idea generation; the development of business models; networking; marketing; finance; human resource management; customer relationship management and driving growth.

Gain an advanced understanding of the external context within which international businesses operate, and the opportunities and challenges this poses to entrepreneurial firms, large and small. You are introduced to key international trade theories and practices, and the application of these to the study of entrepreneurship. You also discuss the external challenges facing international firms, particularly economic, financial, political-legal, technological and cultural challenges.

  • benefit from a learning experience centred on problem-solving
  • take part in the Essex Business School open seminar series and hear from world-respected lecturers
  • research is at the heart of our curriculum; you explore real-world marketing and entrepreneurial challenges

Assessment

  • Regular assessment is by coursework, presentations, case studies, group work, tests, simulation game assignments and examinations

Dissertation

  • You submit a 15,000 word dissertation or an international marketing plan

Qualifications

UK entry requirements

A 1st, 2:1 or good 2:2 degree, or equivalent, in any discipline.

International and EU entry requirements

We accept a wide range of qualifications from applicants studying in the EU and other countries. Email pgadmit@essex.ac.uk for further details about the qualifications we accept. Include information in your email about the undergraduate qualification you have already completed or are currently taking.

IELTS entry requirements

If English isn’t your first language, we require IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum component score of 5.5

If you do not meet our IELTS requirements then you may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables you to start your course without retaking IELTS.

Applying

You can apply for our postgraduate courses online. You’ll need to provide us with your academic qualifications, as well as supporting documents such as transcripts, English language qualifications and certificates. You can find a list of necessary documents online, but please note we won’t be able to process your application until we have everything we need.

There is no application deadline but we recommend that you apply before 1 July for our taught courses starting in October. We aim to respond to applications within two weeks. If we are able to offer you a place, you will be contacted via email.
