Encouraging learning

Our outreach team works with thousands of young
people every year and more than 100 schools and colleges in Essex, Suffolk
and east London. The team raises awareness of higher education amongst
pupils and their parents, and offers guidance and advice.
Our staff organise lectures, tours, and laboratory and research
placements for pupils on subjects including electronics, software, robotics
and the environment to fit in with the National Curriculum.
Training, talks and lectures
We offer a whole range of short courses and
Continuing Professional Development opportunities designed for people
working in our communities, from local businesses to hospital consultants.
Due to our academic strengths we also provide specialised training and
work with leading national and international organisations across a whole
range of fields, including human rights and the social sciences.
Our public lectures include the annual Burrows
Lecture which has been established for five decades and features
high-profile speakers discussing an issue connected with an aspect of life
in Essex.
We have launched a series of café-style discussions with a difference in
Colchester, where academics debate topical issues with members of the
community. The events at cafés and other public places have covered
philosophy, the Holocaust, language learning and science. Upcoming cafés
will be featured in our events section.
