Communications Office - main responsibilities
The Communications Office, formerly Public Relations, is responsible for the following:
Media relations – actively promoting the University through liaison
with journalists, issuing news releases, identifying
experts/spokespeople for television and radio opportunities, and
handling media inquiries.
Directory of Experts – a printed
and web-based guide for the media on the range of expertise at the
University.
Publications –
Corporate publications, including
Annual Review,
Essex Quarterly,
Introducing
Essex Research and internal news magazine,
Wyvern.
What’s On – producing and
updating daily the web-based What’s On diary of University events, and
issuing the daily e-mail bulletin.
Event management – co-ordinating and
providing assistance to departments with the organisation of
high-profile University events.
Photography – co-ordinating the provision
of a University photographic service.
Monitoring media coverage – media
coverage of the University is collated daily in electronic format and
in a weekly cuttings service.
Media Training – Practical radio and TV
skills training courses are offered in conjunction with Staff
Development. The Communications Office offers advice and guidance about media
skills on request. Tips for talking to the
media.
