Interest soars in university
Inquiries to University Campus Suffolk (UCS) have soared as students race to enrol before higher tuition fees kick in next year. A bumper year has seen the university take 250 course information requests, more than double the numbers if received this time 12 months ago.

Another record year for A-levels prompts frantic university scramble
Record numbers of students embarked on a frantic scramble for a dwindling number of university vacancies last night. The number seeking a place through clearing was 189,992, compared with 185,223 last year…several universities said they would not be joining clearing this year as they had already filled their places. The University of Essex said it would accept only students with A grades for the few places it had left.

The Mercury Youth Theatre returns to the main stage this year with a theatrical production of Laurie Lee’s popular West Country novel, Cider with Rosie. The marks the return of two former Youth Theatre members, David Norton and Natalie Songer…David has just graduated from East 15 Drama School, in Southend.

An education and training advice service is to close due to a funding crisis. The Learning Shop, in St Nicholas Street, Colchester, is to close on August 31 after more than a decade…sponsors Colchester Institute, Open University, Colchester Sixth Form College and the University of Essex have decided to pull the plug because of rising running costs.

A Colchester graduate and former borough council candidate is among those charged with rioting in London. Peter Simpson, 26, who studied politics and philosophy at the University of Essex, faces four charges in connection with the mayhem in the capital last week.

Southend to get new multi-million pound public library
An Essex town is to get a new multi-million pound public library and learning centre. The £27m building in Southend will replace the town’s existing Central Library and be built on the site of the former Farringdon car park. The four-storey structure, to be called The Forum, will be funded by Southend Borough Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College.

Library given the go-ahead
Plans for a new £27 million library in Southend have been given the go-ahead, but the suggestion of a giant TV within the grounds didn’t go down well. The new building and scenic square, the brainchild of Southend Council, the University of Essex and South Essex College, will replace the Farringdon multi-storey car park in Elmer Approach.

Work to demolish old Farringdon car park begins
Workers are to restart the demolition of a town centre car park to make way for a new £27million library in the heart of Southend. Southend Council will contribute £12.5million of the cost, Essex University £10.4million and South Essex College £4million.

Essex University has now applied for planning permission to build a £21 million student centre and library extension. Plans for a six-storey library and a three-storey student centre have been drawn up by Patel Taylor Architects, the company which designed the university's controversial Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall.

Why do people find video games so irresistible?
The secret behind the ever-increasing popularity of video games is that it enables you to act through a different identity and feel better about yourself and your abilities, says new research.
This research was led by Andy Przybylski, visiting research fellow at the University of Essex, the journal Psychological Science reports. 'A game can be more fun when you get the chance to act and be like your ideal self,' explained Przybylsk.

Self-professed farm nerd Max Elliott loves picking okra. An amateur might not know the plant secretes an oil that will leave the untrained, bare-handed gardener scratching for hours. He lived in San Francisco and got a job as a food stacker. He volunteered with some middle school gardening projects. He went on to attend a one-year master's program in Environmental Studies from the University of Essex in Colchester, England, after working with a few more community gardening programs. He learned that it was important to teach people not just to grow food, but also how to cook.

A mind-reading device that taps into a driver's brain can recognise and act on the brain signals to stop the car precious milliseconds before the signals become leg movements. Palaniappan Ramaswamy at the University of Essex in Colchester, UK, points out that the experiment was conducted in a simulated environment where the subjects were fully alert and prepared to brake, which is seldom the case in reality.

Bill Gore, a chemical engineer and accountant, joined the 25-strong board, which is responsible for the university's budget, planning and investments in 2005. He will be replaced by Lord Currie of Marylebone.

Top A-level students to be offered cut-price degrees
Students with top A-level grades are set to be offered cut-price courses and cash sums by universities desperate to attract them.
These deals are being aimed at pupils with grades of at least two A's and a B after the Government announced they can take-on as many students as they want as long as they meet those standards.
Sir Steve Smith, outgoing president of Universities UK and vice chancellor of Exeter University, says changes brought in by the Coalition will force many institutions to offer enticing deals to students.
Cash deals are already being offered in Essex and Kent to attract students for next year, where students getting three A's will get a £2,000 scholarship regardless of their financial circumstances. Read in full here

Student digs go-ahead
University bosses have welcomed a new high-rise student block which is set to be built behind the Waterfront in Ipswich. The 14-storey building, which was unanimously approved by planning members yesterday, will sit off Star Lane. Simon Britton, interim director of estates at University Campus Suffolk, welcomed the decision.
