Study with us
Year in Latin America
All of our undergraduate courses include a year spent studying abroad, giving you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live and study in Latin America and immerse yourself in its culture.
Latin America is a complex and fascinating region. We have played a leading role in Latin American teaching and
research since our University was founded. Our undergraduate single and
joint-honours courses and postgraduate opportunities are built on almost fifty
years' experience in the study of Latin America.

Facilities for Latin American studies
We have an excellent reputation both nationally and internationally. Our Essex
Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA) is an internationally significant collection of more
than 700 artworks by contemporary Latin American artists. Our Centre for Latin American
and Caribbean Studies (CLACS) organises events and seminars that bring together researchers from across
our University.
Our approach and research expertise
We offer interdisciplinary courses that bring together language experts, lecturers and researchers from the
humanities and the social sciences, with undergraduate modules available in literature, film, history of art,
history, politics and sociology. You also learn Spanish and/or Portuguese to an advanced level. The range of
subjects offered is mirrored in the wide variety of research projects currently being pursued by
the academic staff who teach our courses. You will learn from internationally recognised
experts in Latin America.
