UECLAA presents a programme of video and short films made by Brazilian artists. Curated by Caroline Menezes

Video art is flourishing in Brazil and offers unique insights into aspects of the country's uneven development and the diversity of its hybrid culture.  Through the eyes of video artists we can access the heterogeneous, and sometimes divergent, production of the largest Latin America country. This special event provides an opportunity to see a range of material not readily available elsewhere: works by the artists Ana Maria Maiolino, part of University’s Collection of Latin American Art together with recent work by contemporary Brazilian video art makers Lourival Cuquinha, Maria Lucia Cattani, Cezar Migliorin, Gregório Graziosi and the Collective of artists Gráfica Utópica - O Circo dos Sonhos. We will also be showing the short film “Muro” directed by Tião (Pernambuco-Brazil), which was awarded the Short Film Prize "Un Regard Neuf" (A New Look) at the 2008 Cannes Festival.

The artist Lourival Cuquinha and the director Tião  will be present and will introduce his work and anwer questions of the audience.

Programme

Maria Lucia Cattani

o o o

5min | 2007| Video

Synopsis: Circles formed by throwing stones into water become materialised and frozen in a rhythm of expansion and contraction. Music: Daniel Wolff

Gregório Graziosi

Saltos

8min | 2008| HDV

Synopsis: Experimental Narrative about a young diving athlete that begins losing his hearing

Lourival Cuquinha

Costumes [Custom],

11min | 2007| Video

Synopsis: Naked people diving in a pool full of clothes and than they come out dressed. Those clothes represent the passport for the 'civilized' world, 'freedom' loses and 'control' wins. Fit the pattern in not a simple job and this is the metaphor: Naked free people trying hard to get dressed, trying hard to adapt themselves.

Cezar Migliorin

Meu nome é Paulo Leminski [My Name is Paulo Leminski]

5 min | 2004| Video

Synopsis: "Everything I do, someone in me that I despise always thinks it's great." Inter-generational discord and the difficulty of passing down aesthetic wisdom are affectionately satirized in this unapologetically lo-fi home video. The filmmaker's own sympathies are wisely left unclear.

Gráfica Utópica - O Circo dos Sonhos (Andrei Muller and Gustavo Speridião)

Either Walk on water or Fly

6 min | 2008| Video

Synopsis: Changing the notion of time a familiar reality could become a disturbing universe. But redemption comes along.

Anna Maria Maiolino

In-Out Antropofagia, 1973 – 2000

8 min | 1973| Video

Synopsis: Part of UECLAA, the seminal Maiolino video refers to the Modernism concept of cultural cannibalism. In the film (originally produced on super-8) two mouths - a male and a female - undertake a wordless conversation.

Tião

Muro, [Wall] 2008

18min | 2008| 35mm

Synopsis: soul in vacuum, desert in expansion.
