Year Abroad Internships - Bahia Street
Bahia Street
(Salvador) works to educate young black girls in Bahia,
Brazil. Bahia Street began when Rita Conceino, a
sociologist of Salvador, Brazil and Dr. Margaret Willson,
an anthropologist who was working in Salvador, decided
after several years of working together in the slums of
Salvador that they wanted to actively work for change in
breaking the cycles of poverty they saw. They talked to
people in the favelas and the constant answer that came
was: education, quality education that would allow young
people to obtain professional middle-class jobs and
middle-class incomes--and who would have middle-class
power for change. From these conversations, Bahia Street
was born.
