UPDATE FROM THE CENTRE DIRECTOR

We have been having some very productive discussions recently about improving our visibility to applicants and our identity. Our student reps have been fantastic in coming up with ideas as to how we might communicate with people who are looking for a different and challenging kind of degree. We are working on the websites at present to make them more direct in the way they describe what we do and why our degrees are special.

We are about to make CISH: The Movie (in fact, four films: one for each degree course, a bit like the Star Wars franchise) with the video production team at Essex, and we’ll need some volunteers soon to be involved in that project, talking about their studies, year abroad experiences and so on. But since CISH is a lively and fun organisation, the team believe that students will make better and more interesting films independently, and that these could complement the official movies. So, I am announcing a call for applications to make 3 minute videos that we can use on the CISH website. Some of you may already be budding filmmakers – but if you need technical support we can hook you up with film students at Colchester or at E15 Acting School. To apply, simply send a 100-word scenario or film idea to the Lyn Loaring and Dawn Mott on cish@essex.ac.uk by 31 January 2013. The CISH Directors will take a look at the entries the best ones will be selected for support via our marketing budget.

Finally, we have been discussing the name of CISH (again!). We have come to the view that we should drop the ‘Centre’ and ‘Humanities’ bits, becoming ‘Interdisciplinary Studies’ at Essex. We don’t know if you have a better idea, so here’s a challenge: suggestions for a name for CISH, to be sent via email by 31 January 2013. There will, I am sure, be a mystery prize for the more original (and viable!) idea.
