Why study Europe?
Europe
is a global political and economic centre that exerts enormous international
influence. Few areas in the world are as fascinating and complex as Europe -
whether you consider the politics or the economics, the art or the architecture,
the literature or the archaeology, the sociology or the anthropology of the
continent.
European Studies appeals to those who are planning to study politics,
economics, sociology, literature, history, or indeed any of the humanities or
social sciences at university level but who would like to give their studies an
extra dimension of challenge and originality. Students following European
Studies can expect to develop their potential to the full in at least three
different academic disciplines, to learn to work individually and in groups, to
gain research experience and to acquire skills in collecting, analysing and
ordering information. They will also become proficient in one or more new
languages*. Finally, in spending a year abroad studying in Europe,
students will be able to present future employers with evidence of a capacity
for inter-cultural understanding, self-reliance and independent endeavour.
* There is a degree course on which it is not compulsory to take a
language.
