Prospective Students Granada

Why study Europe?

Few areas in the world are as fascinating and complex as Europe - whether you consider the art or the architecture, the sociology or the politics, the literature or the archaeology, the economics or the anthropology of the area.

Who should apply to do European Studies?

European Studies appeals to those who are planning to study literature, history, art, sociology or indeed any of the humanities or social sciences at university level but who would like to give their studies an extra dimension of challenge and originality.  Students following European Studies can expect to develop their potential to the full in at least three different academic disciplines, to have learned to worked separately and in groups, to have research experience and to have skills in amassing, analysing and ordering information. They will also add to their portfolio the transferable skills of one or more new languages*.  Finally, in spending a year abroad studying in Europe, students will be able to present future employers with evidence of a capacity for self-reliance and independent endeavour.

What are the degrees like?

European Studies offers undergraduates a choice of pursuing a broad based interdisciplinary syllabus or a specified discipline-based pathway. Students in all schemes will reach honours level in at least one Modern European Language*.  The courses will differ in the range and type of modules offered and according to individual requirements and emphases.  Students may take modules from a set of European Studies Options.

Further information about the structure of the degrees.

Is there a language learning component to the degrees?*

Yes - languages are central to the Essex degree.  However, competence in these languages is not a prerequisite for admission to the degree course.

Do you offer MA degree courses and research degrees?

Staff members contribute to a wide range of courses with substantial European content within their own disciplines and departments.  Supervision for the degrees of MPhil and PhD on topics connected with Europe is available in the areas of art history, history, literature, political science and sociology.  The respective departments also administer a number of Doctoral Programmes with a European component.

What can I go on to do with my degree?

Employers in all areas of business, professional and public life are increasingly looking for graduates who can combine language skills with a knowledge of European affairs. These are some of the careers our graduates have gone into: journalism, archaeology, anthropology, BBC programme production, translation, teaching, Information Technology management, banking, Foreign Office, public relations, international relations, management, imports and exports, museology, development and non-governmental organisations.

* with BA European Studies there is no compulsory language requirement.
