European Studies with Politics

FIRST YEAR

Four modules comprising:

1. GV102-4-FY Introduction to European Politics

2. Language advanced (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish) or Part 1 Intensive Language.

3. 2nd part Intensive Language or full module or two half modules chosen from European options

4. CS102-4-FY Europe: Myth and Idea

Important note: students studying Intensive Language - this represents 60 credits and therefore only two additional modules are taken. 

Options list

Pre-requisites for progression to second year:

  • 40% in both exam and coursework/exam aggregate for GV102-1-FY
  • 40% in both exam and coursework/exam aggregate for European option (2 above)
  • 40% in both exam mark and coursework mark for Language component (either 3 above or 3 and 4 above for Intensive language students)
  • To participate in Study Abroad, students must achieve a year mark of 53% or above in their first year of study.
  • Important note: students who fail to achieve the required 53% will be unable to continue on a European Studies course.

N.B.  Students planning to take CS831, Dissertation module, in their final year are strongly advised to take CS241, Doing Research for a BA Dissertation , in the Spring term of their second year.

SECOND YEAR

Four modules at second year level comprising:

1. GV271-5-FY West European Politics or GV214-5-FY International Relations

2. Full module or two half modules chosen from European Option list, excluding GV modules

3. Language module

4. Full module or two half modules chosen from European Options list

THIRD YEAR

To be spent following assessed modules or their equivalent at an approved institution of higher education in the country of the language studied in second year.  Choice of country, university and modules for the Year Abroad is subject to the approval of the Course Director.  

The final year Dissertation will be optional and discretionary, subject to the approval of the Dissertation Coordinator or Course Director. Students opting to write a Dissertation are expected to do some research on their Dissertation during the Year Abroad.  

FINAL YEAR

Four modules at third year level comprising:

1. Full module or two half modules from GVxxx modules in European Option list

2. Full module or two half modules chosen from European Options list but excluding GV modules

3. Language module – Level 6

4. Discretionary Dissertation in Government or Full module or two half modules chosen from GV options

Please note, the same language must be studied throughout the four years of the course.
