European Studies with Modern Languages

FIRST YEAR

Four modules comprising:

1. Language module (French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish – post 'A‘ level module or first half of Intensive module)

2. Language module (second module in a different language or 2nd half of Intensive Language module for students taking Italian, Spanish or German)

3. CS102-4-FY - Europe : Myth and Idea

4. Full module or two half modules in Discipline B from European Options

Important note, for students studying Intensive Language - this represents 60 credits and therefore only two additional modules are chosen.

Optional Module list for first year students (please note, options are likely to change)

Pre-requisites for progression to second year:

  • 40% in both coursework and exam for Language component (see 1 and 2 above)
  • 40% exam mark and aggregate coursework/exam mark European options (see 3 and 4 above)
  • To participate in Study Abroad, students must achieve a year mark of 53% or above in their first year of study.
  • Important note: Students who fail to achieve the required 53% will be unable to continue on a European Studies course.

N.B. Students planning to take CS831, Dissertation module, in their final year are strongly advised to take CS241, Doing Research for a BA Dissertation, in the Spring term of their second year.

SECOND YEAR

Four modules at second year level comprising:

1. Language module

2. Language module

3. Full module or two half modules in Discipline A chosen from European Options list

4. Full module or two half modules in Discipline B chosen from European Options list

Optional Module list for second and final year students

THIRD YEAR

To be spent following assessed modules or their equivalent at an approved institution of higher education in the country of the language studied in second year. Choice of country, university and modules for the Year Abroad is subject to the approval of the Course Director.

The final year Dissertation will be optional and discretionary, subject to the approval of the Dissertation Coordinator or Course Director. Students opting to write a Dissertation are expected to do some research on their Dissertation during the Year Abroad.

Students intending to take two languages to Level 6 in Final Year will spend the Year Abroad in the country of the first language and a vacation period of at least 16 weeks between the end of second year and the beginning of final year in a country where the second language is spoken.

FINAL YEAR

Four modules at third year level comprising:

1. Language module – Level 6

2. Language module

3. Full course or two half options in Discipline A from European Options list

4. Discretionary Dissertation in Discipline A or full module or two half modules chosen from European Options list.
