Charities associated with the University

A number of charitable causes are based at, or supported by, the University of Essex, either as on-going projects or one-off events.

  • University Campus Suffolk
    UCS is a joint venture between the University of Essex and UEA, providing higher education to over 3,000 students. It is an exempt charity jointly controlled by both universities. It's financial results are included in the group financial statements of the University
  • The Children's Legal Centre
    A unique, independent national charity based at the University and funded by grants from central government, the UK National Lotteries Board, the BBC Children in Need Appeal Fund, donations, sales of publications and consultancy work.
  • Colchester and District Talking Newspaper
    Local news on cassette tapes: a free talking newspaper for the blind and partially sighted.
  • The European Consortium for Political Research
  • Friends International Colchester (formerly COSCI)
    A group representing local Christians in Colchester both on and off the campus, welcoming International Students to the town regardless of religious belief.
  • Essex Nightline
    Provides crisis listening for students with phone and drop-in services, crash accommodation for emergencies, free contraception, camp bed hire, and run an information service.
  • Foundation for Urban and Regional Studies
    A registered charity formed in 1970 to provide a strong base and an infrastructure to help scholars in their research and training, particularly by fostering collaboration through creating an extensive network of political scientists in Europe and beyond.
  • Opportunities Through Technology
    An organisation dedicated to training people with disabilities to use technology to help make the job and educational market a more even playing field for them.
  • Re-Cycle - The Bicycle Charity
    A registered Colchester based charity that collects old bikes in the UK and ships them to Africa where people without transport walk miles to work, to collect water or to attend college.
  • St. John Ambulance LINKS Society
    LINKS is the name for the student wing of St. John Ambulance. LINKS exists to recruit new members to St. John and also to provide a location for existing members to get involved whilst studying.

Volunteering for local charities

  • St Helena Hospice have many opportunities for volunteers, including direct care for patients, administration, fundraising - office and at events - shop work and driving, and are always desperate for help.   • Do It is a searchable national database allowing you to search for volunteering opportunities by post code.
  • Scope in Colchester & Tendring is a Day Care Centre for people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities. The Centre provides social stimulation, art activities, pottery, computer work, aromatherapy, reflexology for individuals who are unable to work or have limited access to the local community. We welcome all volunteers that want to give a little of their time to help promote peoples choices, independence and improve their self esteem.
