Welcome
From Professor Anthony Forster
Celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2014, the University of Essex is ranked ninth in Research Assessment 2008, a national
assessment of research quality and twentieth in the THE Top 100 universities under 50. Our commitment to excellence in research and
excellence in education is at the core of the University’s mission and Essex has as its ambition to be in the top 25 UK universities.
Since its establishment the University of Essex has had a distinctive identity and a specific point of view. As we prepare to enter our second
50 years, the University will continue to speak its mind to new audiences and new generations of students, stakeholders, friends and alumni. If you
think you have the creativity to help us grab the attention of audiences swamped with identikit messages; the empathy to build lasting and beneficial
relationships with friends and stakeholders attracted to what makes Essex different; and the determination to ensure that we stand out from the crowd,
then we hope you will be attracted to one of these new leadership roles.
The Director of Advancement and the Director of Communications will
each be central members of our Communications and External Relations
Section. As a University, we are challenging ourselves to understand and demonstrate our relevance to the audiences we wish to reach. We want
the excellence of our education and our research to be understood and valued fully, helping us build our profile and our networks so that in
future we can have an even greater impact on the lives of our students and on society as a whole. Your ideas about how we can achieve these
goals and your skills in ensuring that we deliver them are more important than your experience of higher education.
I took up my appointment as Vice-Chancellor in August 2012 and you can find out more information about me,
including my blogs on key issues facing the University, on my Vice-Chancellor website.
I have appointed Ellwood Atfield as advisors to the University and if you would like to discuss the role informally you can contact them by email at
