‘Theory in the Face of Global Challenges’

There is little doubt, today, that we face a series of connected global challenges: the danger of climate change, a crisis of international finance and global capitalism, an increasing logic of minoritization, the intensification of various forms of religious fundamentalism, growing social and economic inequalities, the ‘mediatization of society’, and a palpable disillusionment with politics and politicians.

Under the banner of ‘Theory in the Face of Global Challenges’, the Centre for Theoretical Studies has announced an exciting programme of events to engage with these problems. Throughout the year there will be seminars, workshops, and conferences that will take up various aspects of these global challenges. The Centre will bring together prominent and controversial theorists within and outside the University of Essex to address these growing challenges.

Now located in the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Centre continues to encourage interdisciplinary research, whilst providing a forum for ongoing staff and student development. Most events will take place on Thursday lunchtimes at 1pm. The Centre continues to be directed by David Howarth and Aletta Norval, and has also appointed a new Administrator, Sian Savage, who can be contacted on ssavage@essex.ac.uk.
