Poster (PDF)

For enquiries please contact the Senior Student Administrator or the Course Director Mr Chris Tanner

The Goals of the Programme:

This unique MA in Management and Organisational Dynamics combines the insights of two innovative departments in the University: the Essex Business School, and the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies. This integrated approach aims to provide a  deep analysis of the way organizations function, the nature of leadership and the way organizational structure and dynamics contribute to the operation of  groups and systems. Learning is both through taught, and experiential elements,  providing a  platform both for further academic study, and  creative intervention  in organisations .

Who is the MA for?

The course is for students who are interested in deepening their understanding of organisational functioning. Typically students have a focus in developing senior-level management skills, coaching and consultancy capacity, or  further research into organisational operations.  Students should have a good first degree in a related area, or relevant post-graduate experience ( subject to approval from the Dean of Graduate Studies)

What is the Impact of the Programme?

The contemporary organisation is characterised by complexity and change. Graduates of the course are well placed to make sense of such complicated dynamics. This is a powerful programme for those seeking to make significant  contributions both to developing thinking, and to practice in organisations.

Duration of the MA

The course is available as a 1 year full time, or two year part time programme.  Teaching for the part-time version of this MA programme takes place on Wednesday during term-time in the first year and Tuesday in the second year. Full-time students attend for both days for one academic year.

Freud Pre-sessional Course

In preparation for the MA, students are required to attend the pre-sessional course on Freud.  This course covers all of the major readings that students will be expected to be familiar with when beginning the MA.  It gives a thorough grounding in Freud enabling students to start the course running from day one.  Students who can demonstrate a particularly strong grounding in Freud through previous training can formally apply to place out of the pre-sessional: however, it is strongly encouraged that all students participate.
